PARKING/UNLOADING:
- Avoid hazards like sharp objects, tripping, steep hills, and water.
- Players need enough room to move around without running into each other.
SIZE:
- Open field playing areas with bunkers are best between 50'x100' and 100'x200'.
- Areas that include a lot of cover (like buildings, large trees, bunkers) can be enjoyable up to 200'x500'.
- Wooded playing areas are best kept to 2 acres (200'x400') or less. Avoid thick woods that prevents quick movement.
- Indoor playing areas of rooms and hallways are generally less enjoyable and increase the chance of injury due to collision.
ENJOYMENT:
- The players need to be able to move from one hiding place to another.
- Skinny trees, boxes, trash cans, etc make poor cover.
- Include bunkers if the players need to cross open areas of more than 30 feet.
- Flat ground is best, but a slight grade is usually fine. Players will tire easily if hills are steep.
BUNKERS:
- The bunkers need to be secured to the ground with 6 inch spikes when set up outdoors, so they cannot be used on hard surface, artificial turf or in sand.
- Bunkers do not need to be secured when used indoors.
- We can angle spikes to reduce depth to 4 inches as needed to avoid irrigation.
LIGHTING:
- Players need to see where they are going and all possible hazards including collision with other players, so adequate lighting is required.
- Darker IS NOT better. Our most tactical games are played in daylight.
- Use of strobe lights or other visibility impairing techniques are not permitted.
- Adequate lighting measurement is at the discretion of the Game Masters, our focus is always safety first and maximum enjoyment a very close second.
- For after dark parties we can supply a couple small lanterns to help in dark corners, but they only light up a very small area.
MUSIC:
- Players need to be able to hear the sound effects of the equipment in order to enjoy the game.
- Music may be played at a low volume, but not during the equipment briefings performed by the Game Master.
PARKING/UNLOADING:
- It is the obligation of the customer to provide parking and unloading/loading area as close as possible to the playing area.
- Delays caused by poor parking or unloading arrangements could reduce the amount of playing time for your party or event.
- Please have parking permit ready upon arrival for any restricted parking.
- The players will get thirsty preiodically from the physical activity of Tactical Laser Tag. The closer you have drinks to the playing area the quicker players will return to playing. Game Masters as drink breaks as needed between games.
PUBLIC PARKS
- If you do not have a suitable yard for your party you might consider using a public park. Small neighborhood parks seem to work best.
- The responsibility of making arrangements for use of the park belongs to the customer. We are not responsible if authorities shut down your party. This is very rare, but worth mentioning. We recommend that you seek permission to use the park, which may require a permit or pavilion rental.
- We have set up at more than a hundred parks across several states. Here are some that have worked well in the DC area:
- Bethesda/NW DC: Wood Acres Park (small hill with trees), Fort Bayard Park (center hill with trees), Western Grove Park, Brookdale Park
- Southeast DC: The Fields at RFK (grass field between turf fields & island path), Garfield Park
- Arlington VA: Lacey Woods Park (grassy area with trees along Frederick St), Fort CF Smith Park,
- Fall Church: Olney Park (grassy field with large trees)
- Vienna VA: Glyndon Park (area between parking lot and pavilion on slight slope)

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q-What kind of adjustments have been made to prevent the spread of viruses?
All of the equipment is sanitized before every event, and can be sanitized during events as well. Hand sanitizer is available. Briefing, gear up and game play can all be handled while maintaining proper social distance. Wearing the headbands with sensors are optional.
Q-Can I have laser tag at my home?
Absolutely. Most of our laser tag parties are held at private residences. You'll want to have one of these two options to maximize the fun: An area at least 30 feet by 60 feet, OR the ability to move all the way around the house. We can do smaller yards for young children, but older kids and adults will want plenty of room to move around.
Q-How does outdoor laser tag work?
The equipment shoots an infrared beam across hundreds of feet to "tag" the sensors on opponents. This can be done in all light conditions. It does not need to be the least bit dark. Bright sunshine works just fine. We separate the players into 2 teams and run games that generally last 7 to 15 minutes long. There is no need for electricity, internet or any other provision. Each laser tag unit has it's own battery and the Game Master keeps track of team scoring.
Q-Are home laser tag parties as fun as parties at the laser tag place?
Overwhelming consensus is that Tactical Laser Tag is much more fun. Not only is the game play much more enjoyable, the players get a lot more laser tag action. It's much more convenient to have the party at your home then to drag everyone to a public building and be processed along with dozens of other parties. The freedom of timing, food options, etc make the overall experience much better for everyone.
Q-Do you rent laser tag equipment?
No, we provide a guaranteed enjoyable laser tag service. We use equipment that is maintained and sighted on a regular basis to insure that all players will have a great time. The Game Master takes control of the games and officiates for maximum fun and safety. Just having a professional in charge makes a huge difference for most groups of players. We have been told by many customers that when they rent laser tag equipment from a company the units are typically in bad repair and it's a struggle for the players to get organized to have fun.
Q-Do you cover my area?
We provide laser tag parties in several states, including Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, North Carolina and New Jersey. We will travel even farther for large group events. Travel fees vary by location and Game Master. Some locations will require a large group event package to be worth the trip. Check out the Game Master and Booking pages for travel fee charts.
Q-How old do I have to be to play Tactical Laser Tag?
The minimum age is 7 years old. This is not only dictated by our Insurance company, but also a good age for kids to be able to handle the equipment and still have a great time. Younger players should be accompanied by an adult.
Q-Is this a kids' game?
No, and yes. Tactical Laser Tag is so incredibly versatile it can be played by young children at a birthday party one day, then used as an adult tactics and conditioning exercise the next. One event might be an all girl party. Then next a tournament with all paintball experienced players. The game type variety also allows for the game to be only as complex as you want it to be. It even works great for a mixed group, like adults playing along with children.
Q-What should I wear?
Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed shoes for outdoor play. Long pants are suggested for playing in the woods. Otherwise, just wear whatever is comfortable for movement in the playing area environment and weather. Players will be wearing a headband that might not fit over some hats. Do not use face paint as this will get on the headbands and blasters.
Q-What equipment will I have to wear?
One of the many great things about Tactical Laser Tag is there is no burdensome equipment to wear. Each player will carry a laser tag blaster and wear a headband with 2-3 lightweight sensors.
Q-Is it safe?
Tactical Laser Tag is safer than most sports or recreational activities. The equipment uses infrared beams like that of your TV remote control. There is actually no "laser" involved. NO CONTACT is permitted and the event is fully supervised to ensure a safe environment. Since no safety equipment is required you don't need to worry about players taking it off during play. We inspect all playing areas at the time of the event and provide a Game Master/Referee that keeps a close watch that all players are being safe.
Q-Where can we play?
Tactical Laser Tag can be played indoors or outdoors, in the woods or in a field using our bunkers, in a gym or warehouse. The possibilities are endless. If you do not have a suitable location contact your local parks, armory, community center or sportsplex. All of these have been used. Many parties and events take place in yards or on church/school property. Tactical Laser Tag can be played in intermittent light rain/snow, in bright sunlight, or anything in between. Though it can be played in the dark, safety becomes a more prominent priority for younger age groups. Adequate lighting for safety is required for dark playing areas. This is often provided sufficiently by house lights, street lights, etc.
Q-How many people can play at once?
Up to 16 people can play at one time, but you can play with as few as 4. It is common to have spectacular game play with 6-16 kids and adults in a typical yard.
Q-Are the red dot scopes really necessary?
Yes. The infrared beam fired by the laser tag blaster is very tight and only shot effectively if well aimed.
Q-Is it like paintball?
It can be very similar to paintball in game play, but definitely not in terms of safety, pain and mess. Since we shoot light there is no lobbing required and our equipment shoots up to 1000 feet. When your hit points are gone the laser tag blaster shuts off, so cheating is impossible. Some games are played elimination style but many are respawn games that allow all players to reactivate and play the entire time limit. This is more desirable to most players.
Q-Is it like the flashy indoor laser tag I played before when I was on vacation?
Not so much. Tactical Laser Tag is more exciting, intense and strategic. Our games reward teamwork. And, the equipment shoots farther and requires aiming. However, Tactical Laser Tag is very versatile. For young children it is similar to conventional laser tag with a bigger adrenaline rush. For teenagers and adults it is more like a live-action video game that is immersive. For weekend warriors it is the ultimate in action fun with friends.
Q-Why haven't I heard of this kind of thing before?
The technology required to fire tight infrared beams for long distances in bright sunlight is fairly new and originated in Australia. There are not many commercial outdoor laser tag businesses in the United States. The equipment is also very expensive making it accessible to only those interested in running a professional operation.
Q-Can it really be used as a tactical exercise?
Absolutely. Unlike paintball and other pursuit combat sports Tactical Laser Tag equipment performs more realistic and does not require safety gear. Players can wear duty uniforms and play in the environment that they work. This allows for more realistic missions and a higher intensity.
Q-Do players ever get hurt?
Not only is it very rare that a player gets hurt, the severity of the injury is usually so minor that the player doesn't even want to stop playing. Most parties go from start to finish without any problems due to the no contact rules.
Q-What is the equipment like?
Tactical Laser Tag equipment is very advanced yet simple to use. After 2 minutes of briefing any player can operate their laser tag blaster with full confidence. The equipment is of reasonable weight for gameplay, made with a metal housing for durability. Each unit has a trigger, reload button, a button to change rate-of-fire(Battle Gear), Stats button(Adventure Gear), and a scope. Some units have adjustable stocks. There are 2 or 3 sensors on a headband and one sensor on the unit.
Q-Do I have to have a big group to play?
No. Parties are usually best with six or more players. Minimum number of players per game is 4.
